To maintain a healthy pet, hygiene is key- even when it comes to the ear. By keeping ears clean, you prevent bruising that could cause seriuos health problems. What is it? Ear hematoma refers to the thickening of the tissue around the ear. In more severe cases, it retains fluid, or blood clots, which can cause the ear to swell. What causes it? This Condition can arise as a result of an ear infection caused by ear mites, fungi or bacteria. The infection, in turn, causes inflammation and/or itching. The pet tends to scratch or injure the ear, breaking the capillaries, wich results in the hematoma. Remedy: A licensed veterinarian removes the accumulated fluid surgically so that the tissue can heal. In seriuos cases, the ear may not return to its original size. Prevention: It's very simple to prevent this uncomfortable condition: you must keep the ears clean. Wash them every two weeks with solutions made for this purpose and keep the area dry after cleaning, as moisture is the main cause of ear infections. The use of cotton swabs or homemade solutions is not recomended as they can irritate the ears, which can also lead to infection. Revista: Pet, I.D
