Filter? What filter? By: Mayra Rivera The filter is the most important piece of an aquarium as it cleans and oxygenates the water that fish need to breathe. Three types of filtration for the aquarium are recomended: -Biological filtration: Removes ammonia and nitrites from water with organisms or bacteria. -Mechanical Filtration: Retains organic materials to maintain water clarity with filtering engine. -Chemical Filtration: Materials, such as activated carbon, filter to remove impurities such as copper, chlorine, proteins dissolved in water and medicines. Although all there are important, aquariums must have a biological filtration system and a mechanic one. There are internal and external filters to remove dirt from the tank ,but the use of both depends on the amount of fish, plants and the size of the tank. The filters are washed every one or two weeks, preferably with chlorine free water. For saltwater aquariums, the basic principle is the same, but they require more care as the salt water takes longer to stabilize, and maintenance is more expensive. Revista: Pet Id
